ACA

The Advanced Competence Assessment (ACA) was introduced in 1999 as a path for graded Electricians who have gained the required level of site experience and wish to upgrade to Approved Electrician.

The ACA is a mandatory requirement for upgrading to Approved Electrician.

The ACA is undertaken at the SECTT Assessment Centre in Cambuslang and takes one day to complete.

The first attempt at the ACA is offered free of charge to all candidates who were funded for the apprenticeship. The SJIB National Board has agreed that the industry will absorb these costs. Any resit fees, however, will be covered by the candidates.

The ACA consists of the following five sections:

A –Assessment of Safe Working Practices (Risk Assessments)
B – Safe Isolation of Supplies
C – Inspection and Testing
C1 – Initial Verification
C2 – Periodic Inspection and Testing
D – Supervision (Operatives and Installation Work)
E – Underpinning Knowledge Assessment
Each section must be completed within specified target times.

All work must comply with the current requirements of BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations) and health and safety legislation.

The ACA can only be taken at the approved assessment centre which is licensed annually by the Scottish Joint Industry Board (SJIB). The SJIB has delegated the administration of the ACA to SECTT. Further Information on ACA eligibility and how to book can be found here:
